P.S 197 offers DANCE for all grades, Pre-K-5. Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade dance classes focus on creative movement. Students learn about the Elements of Dance (Body, Energy, Space, Time, and Relationship) and how they inform our movement as dancers. Students learn locomotor movement, how to respond to music, and how to work together through movement explorations while building strength and coordination for dance.
Grades 2-5 focus on technique. Students learn various styles of dance, including Jazz, Modern, and cultural dances such as Salsa, Flamenco and Folk Dance. Students also have opportunities to watch dance, reflect upon dance, and create their own dances. Each class has the opportunity to perform in the Winter Gala, Spring Gala, or the annual Dance Festival.
